Diné College Shiprock Library Project Awarded to Jaynes

January 14 2009

Jaynes Corporation was awarded the design/build contract for the Diné College Shiprock Library project, a public-access library at Diné College main New Mexico Campus. The new 20,000 square foot building will be a community educational facility that will improve and benefit the local Shiprock population and residents of northwestern New Mexico.

The multi-million dollar project is scheduled to break ground in June 2009 and will be completed summer 2010. The Shiprock Library project will be applying for LEED Certification through the United States Green Building Council.

Diné College is the first public institution of higher education chartered in 1968 by the Navajo Nation, and the first tribally controlled community college in the United States. Diné College utilizes a one-college, multi-campus system, with campuses in New Mexico and Arizona. The Shiprock, New Mexico campus was founded in the early 1970’s within facilities built by the Bureau of Indian Affairs in the 1950’s.

Diné College is a two-year college and is affiliated with and accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association and Schools. The College is the only institution of higher education on the Navajo Nation and it maintains a multi-site system with campuses and centers located in eight geographically dispersed sites in Arizona and New Mexico. On average, Diné College enrolls over 98% Native American students (predominately Navajo) at its eight campuses and centers in New Mexico and Arizona. They have approximately 2,000 students per semester.

The Shiprock Campus is located 44 miles northeast of Tsaile, serving the largest community within the Navajo Nation and the surrounding Four Corners region. Educational, athletic, administrative and research facilities are located north of town on a mesa overlooking the San Juan Basin, outlying mountain ranges and the majestic Tsé Bit’a’í (Shiprock Pinnacle) to the southwest. The Shiprock Campus is also responsible for the operation of the nearby Diné College Farm.
