Death Valley National Park Housing Units
Death Valley, CA
Housing units for national park personnel
This housing project for the United States Department of the Interior includes the development of an 8 acre site, construction of two 3,100 square foot duplexes, a single 2,400 square foot triplex and a detached 1,000 square foot garage. The duplex buildings contain two 2-bedroom units each and the triplex contains three 1-bedroom units.
Death Valley regularly experiences summer temperatures in excess of 120 degrees and the team was challenged with the task of designing dwellings that would be both sustainable and durable in such a harsh environment. In addition to selecting building materials & colors that would help mitigate the intense summer heat, the design team also oriented the structures to minimize solar heat gain while still allowing ample natural light. The project also includes a grid-tied solar photovoltaic system. Roof top solar panels will produce more than 50% of the building’s total energy demand.
This project was designed and constructed to achieve a LEED Silver certification.
