The New Mexico State Library and Archives is a unique low profile structure with a lower level tucked into the sloping site and the upper level and mechanical mezzanine at grade on the other side of the building. The lower level has been designed with special climate control measures to protect against moisture, sunlight, and airborne gasses. The materials archived in this facility are to be stored for perpetuity and include 16th century Spanish colonial records and documents.
Other sections of the administrative office facility house an electronic library, classrooms, genealogical research center, automated shelves systems throughout, a Talking Books” program with more than 700,000 volumes accessed via automated conveyors, 20,000 lineal feet of government document storage shelving and 800,000 cubic feet of record storage. An effective separation of public and staff spaces has been designed for the different levels of security clearance required for sensitive and valuable items stored at the facility.
