Jaynes Corp | Church & Worship
The San Antonio de Padua Catholic Church on Sandia Pueblo is the first Catholic Church in over a century to be built on Pueblo land in New Mexico. The church was built to replace the original San Antonio de Padua Church built in 1860 on a foundation of rubble and ash. Over the years the old Church shifted and began to crack and was deemed too decrepit and dangerous for worship. The Pueblo wanted a design that would accommodate the future while paying respect to the past. The design that resulted is a sleeker, larger version of the old adobe church.
The new 8,000 square-foot church sits on top of a hill overlooking the pueblo village and is highly visible from I-25. The exterior design resembles the traditional Pueblo architectural with a stucco finish. The interior finishes are plaster walls and wood floors accented with round wood vigas, tongue-and-groove decking, latillas, hand-carved corbels and custom made doors. Key design factors include the simplicity, use of traditional local building materials and incorporation of natural lighting. Another design feature is the building orientation and bank of windows facing the two highest peaks on the Sandia Mountains.
