University of New Mexico Children’s Hospital

Albuquerque, NM

The new University of New Mexico Children’s Hospital is a 6-story, 479,748 square foot facility that houses a Level 1 Trauma Care, Emergency Rooms, a maternity center, and Intensive Care facilities. The emergency center contains seven trauma and resuscitation beds, six isolation beds for patients with communicable diseases, thirty-eight patient beds for adults, and a separate pediatric emergency center with twelve beds. There is a seventy-two bed adult critical care unit, including burn and trauma, neuroscience and medical intensive care services, fifteen labor and delivery rooms, fifteen high-risk ante-partum rooms, and 24 post-partum rooms. The children’s hospital has 20-bed pediatric intensive care unit, a 20-bed oncology unit, a fifty-four bed neonatal unit and six pediatric suites, and a dedicated pediatric surgical suite. New imaging center equipment includes one magnetic resonance imaging machine and two CT scans.

Construction on undeveloped sites makes for ideal conditions; however, this site was far from undeveloped. Safety and site logistics were the most challenging aspects of the construction and were complicated by numerous issues beyond the construction. The architects were challenged to design the new facility between the existing hospital, the AMAFCA storm drain channel, an existing parking structure, and the UNM telecommunications center. Once the obstacles were defined and designs were in place, the construction team has had to work around existing construction that could not be moved nor interrupted.

Construction of a flood water storm drainage box culvert, part of the Albuquerque Metropolitan Arroyo Flood Control Authority system immediately adjacent to the structure, was commenced and completed during the construction of the hospital building. A separate contract to demolish the existing 800 lineal feet of open flood control channel and replace it with a concrete box culvert commenced at the same time as the hospital foundation excavation began.

In addition, the UNM campus telecommunication center was located at ground level on the site and could neither be relocated nor interrupted. Construction had to be accomplished over and around this critical facility totally encompassing it within the new facility.
