Jaynes completed the Carlsbad High School Field House in Carlsbad, New Mexico, on time and on budget in April 2025. This effort transformed an existing, antiquated building into an ultra-modern, 32,958 square foot facility to support the school’s rapidly growing student population and athletic programs.

‍

Jaynes expanded the original 13,080 square foot fieldhouse by 19,878 square feet. The result is a state- of-the-art sports facility with upgraded locker rooms, weight training areas, coaches’ offices, equipment storage, and team meeting rooms for football, baseball, and track athletes.

‍

What’s the community’s response? The Carlsbad High School Fieldhouse has recently been called the best sports training facility in New Mexico (Click to Link to Permian Proud, A Chevron Publication).

‍

One unique characteristic of the project was the integration of laser-scanned data into BIM workflows. Jaynes’ in-house VDC team captured accurate digital scans of the structure to ensure efficient Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) coordination, using advanced modeling tools that allowed for safe and accelerated project delivery.

‍

Jaynes also used its self-perform capabilities to design and fabricate custom wood locker units off-site at its millwork shop. These were installed in temporary locker rooms to maintain student-athlete access, demonstrating Jaynes’ focus on pre-planning and the student-first philosophy of our K-12 educational projects.

‍

Completed in partnership with Owner Carlsbad Municipal Schools and NPSR Architects, the key goal is the facility’s long-term functionality. As a hub for school spirit, the facility symbolizes the district’s investment in an optimal student experience. As a community-minded builder, Jaynes believes that building for students means building for the future.

‍

Project Challenges

The Carlsbad High School Field House expansion and renovation project presented challenges that required strategic pre-planning, precise execution during all construction phases, and intense collaboration with the Owner Carlsbad Municipal Schools and NPSR Architects.

‍

Working on a very active high school campus was a significant hurdle. Construction needed to progress safely and efficiently while

minimizing disruption to daily student activities, athletic programs, and faculty operations. Maintaining access to athletic facilities during the school year required carefully phased scheduling, temporary solutions, and reliable communication with school administrators and the Carlsbad community.

‍

Another core challenge involved expanding and renovating existing structures and integrating the new 19,878 square foot expansion with the existing 13,080 square foot structure. Once demolition of internal areas began, Jaynes faced unforeseen conditions within the original building shell, requiring rapid adjustments in coordination with Designers and Subcontractors.

‍

Jaynes’ in-house BIM and VDC team used laser scanning to accurately document the existing conditions and model all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems.

‍

This approach helped reduce delays and rework, drastically improving communication among all project partners.

‍

Delivering a custom-built environment serving multiple athletic programs demanded extensive pre- planning. Jaynes’ self-perform team fabricated off-site and then installed temporary wood lockers in a transitional facility to avoid disrupting student-athletes’ schedules during construction—a solution required both craftsmanship and logistical planning and coordination.

‍

Despite these challenges, the project was completed on time and on budget, reflecting Jaynes’ commitment to safety, adaptability, and community-building.

‍

Project Success

The Carlsbad High School Field House is a successful example of Jaynes’s ability to reliably deliver complex, community-centered projects. Completed on time and on budget, the project resulted in a fully modernized, 32,958 square foot athletic facility supporting football, baseball, and track programs at Carlsbad High School. By expanding the original 13,080 square foot structure with nearly 20,000 square feet of new construction, Jaynes helped create a sophisticated athletic hub that will serve Carlsbad High School student-athletes for generations.

‍

Jaynes’ strategic planning, client-focused execution, and collaborative project approach drove the success. The team worked on an active school campus, minimized disruptions to daily activities, and maintained safe, clear access for students, staff, and the community. The Jaynes field management team ensured that athletic programs could continue without interruption through proactive communication, thoughtful project planning, and effective collaboration with school leadership and project partners.

‍

Jaynes’ in-house BIM team laser-scanned existing conditions, allowing for detailed coordination of structural and MEP systems, reducing possible rework and maximizing construction efficiency. Another highlight was Jayness’ self-perform millwork, which created temporary locker room solutions that kept athletes’ schedules unaffected throughout the build.

‍

Carlsbad High School officials and local stakeholders praised the completed project for its quality of construction and alignment with the community’s vision of supporting student success both on and off the field. Carlsbad Field House has become a source of pride for the community and a model for future school facility improvements in New Mexico.

‍

Unique project Aspects

Jaynes’ Integration of Old and New

‍

Jaynes successfully expanded an existing 13,080-square-foot field house into an ultra-modern 32,958-square-foot athletic facility, blending new construction with the original structure. This required complex coordination to align structural, MEP, and utility systems while preserving functionality for student-athlete use throughout the project. The project team’s ability to unify both components without compromising quality was significant.

‍

Jaynes’ Advanced Use Of BIM, VDC, and Laser Scanning

Another unique aspect of this project was Jaynes’ use of in-house BIM, VDC, and laser scanning expertise. After the demolition phase, the team scanned the existing building to develop a highly accurate MEP and structural coordination model. This approach helped prevent conflicts, reduce change orders, and ensure a smoother handoff through each phase, especially critical when integrating modern systems into an antiquated facility.

‍

‍

Jaynes’ Self-Perform Millwork

The Jaynes team’s primary project goal was not to disrupt students’ schedules and activities. Jaynes installed temporary lockers in

interim spaces, designing and fabricating temporary wood locker units and necessary components at our in-house millwork shop.

‍

High-quality temporary facilities allowed Carlsbad High student-athletes to continue training and participating in sports during construction without interruption. This solution highlights Jaynes’ ability to self-perform millwork efficiently and adhere to our goals of community-minded education construction. These aspects—integrating old and new construction, advanced use of BIM, VDC, laser scanning, and self-perform millwork—reflect Jaynes’ strengths in flexible project delivery, reliability, and dedication to building educational spaces that uplift communities.
