New Mexico Scientific Laboratories

WINNER OF THE 2010 NAIOP NEW MEXICO AWARD OF EXCELLENCE FOR AN INDUSTRIAL PROJECT, SOUTHWEST CONTRACTOR BEST OF 2010 AWARD FOR A RESEARCH AND SPECIALTY BUILDING AND 2011 ASSOCIATED GENERAL CONTRACTORS NEW MEXICO BEST BUILDING AWARD IN THE $20 MILLION PLUS AND BIM CATEGORIES

The New Mexico Scientific Laboratories (Tri-Labs) is a state-of-the-art, Level Three, multi-agency facility housing the State Department of Health’s Scientific Laboratory Division, the Office of the Medical Investigator and the Department of Agriculture Veterinary Diagnostics Services Office.

Jaynes took the lead on VDC modeling efforts early in the design and documentation phases. The in-house BIM team worked closely with the architect to resolve potential system conflicts prior to construction document issuance.  The BIM effort during construction aided subcontractors with shop drawing efforts as well as multiple discipline coordination prior to installation of any systems.  The BIM team was a crucial part of the success of this project due to their coordination of several scope changes by Owner encompassing interior build-out of shell space, the addition of a CT/MRI suite, equipment monitoring systems, effluent decontamination system & tissue digester.  In the end, Jaynes successfully resolved 5,000+ constructiblity/design issues prior to installation, leading to zero coordination related change orders.

The facility houses three BSL-3 suites totaling approximately 20,000 SF and includes a vivarium, morgue & autopsy space, high performance fume hoods, overhead service carriers, controlled equipment rooms, small/medium bulk sterilizers, evidence drying cabinets, a steel jacketed kettle, and a carcass processing system.

The project was featured in Achieving Business Excellence magazine’s May 2009 issue.
