Cesar Chavez Elementary School
The initial scope of the project included renovations to the existing classroom wings, the new addition of the kindergarten classroom and multipurpose building, and the expansion of the administration offices and band room. Additional scope required the site and systems upgrade to meet the growing needs of the school, as well as code requirements.
The client requested additional scope which included the kitchen expansion, replacing the existing casework, and demolition and replacement of the existing parking lots, curbs, and sidewalks.
When the owner added scope to our already tight schedule, we accepted the challenge of completing the work in the same amount of time with our Lean strategies and thorough Virtual Design Construction (VDC) Coordination. Fast-track phases (demolition and replacement of the existing parking lots, curbs, and sidewalks) were compressed to 51 days for a remodel of 63,000 SF of existing classrooms. Crews stepped up their pace and adjusted workloads when needed in the interest of completing the project on time. In the end, the team managed to complete the job 18 days early, leaving plenty of time for the school to move in and prepare for the 2015 school schedule and opening day of August 17th.
