University of New Mexico Children’s Hospital

UNM Children’s Hospital provides the much needed care for the state of New Mexico. With 479,748 square feet of space, there is a maternity center, newborn intensive care, adult trauma area, 461 patient beds, and emergency units, the hospital serves as the only Level-1 trauma center in the state. Building this facility meant building for our community and serving the doctors, patients, children, and families to the best of our ability.

Construction of the six-story, steel-frame structure was possible through a comprehensive communication plan centered around patients. On the joint venture with JE Dunn Construction, we demolished and re-designed the existing 65,000 SF existing critical care facility as well as a 3,000 SF classroom renovation. The demolition, renovation and construction of the new Children’s Hospital occurred directly adjacent to the existing and operational hospital facility as well as a parking garage, drain channel, University of New Mexico telecommunications center, vehicular traffic, and the University of New Mexico campus. We had to remain flexible so the hospital could provide care to patients and visitors through the three year construction time. Every day, we were meeting with the hospital staff to ensure the plans we had for the day would not inhibit the work they were performing. This successful completion was a testament to great planning and communication through every step of the process.
