Fort Bayard Medical Center

WINNER OF THE 2011 ASSOCIATED GENERAL CONTRACTORS NEW MEXICO BEST BUILDING AWARD FOR A DESIGN-BUILD FACILITY

The new 137,000 square foot facility has multiple single-story buildings which offer a non-institutional, residential scale “village style” environment for healthcare. The perimeter patient residence buildings are closely arranged and connected by enclosed walkways.

They circle the “town square” building which has activity areas consisting of a resident dining hall, fitness center, arts/crafts center, library, chapel, medical clinic, boutique, post office and hair-styling shop. There are 233 patient beds consisting of 81 skilled nursing beds, 92 intermediate care beds, 40 Veterans Administration patient beds and 20 chemical dependency beds.

Bordering the central building are themed healing garden plazas that compliment and support the activity areas. The garden plazas range from an activities-fitness plaza to a quiet, meditative plaza outside of the library and chapel.

The facility features southwestern architecture to compliment and match its surroundings and emulate the historical past of Fort Bayard and New Mexico with Territorial Style exterior stucco and colors influenced by nature. The project achieved LEED Silver.
