CNM Bookstore and Culinary Arts Building
WINNER OF THE 2014 ASSOCIATED GENERAL CONTRACTORS NEW MEXICO BEST BUILDINGS AWARD FOR A LEED CERTIFIABLE PROJECT
This project entailed new construction on the Central New Mexico Community College campus of a facility containing a bookstore, culinary arts classrooms and offices. This two story building contains a sunken courtyard and main lobby, with a curtain wall system on the north side of the building to provide natural light and stunning views of the Sandia Mountains.
Several departments are merged into this two story building: Culinary Arts, the CNM Foundation and the Bookstore. The Culinary arts program consists of 4 main culinary classrooms and one mock restaurant. Each lab is identical in footprint while still providing flexibility for the different curriculum requirements involved. The mock restaurant provides a teaching and serving environment where students can practice real cooking and serving scenarios. A formal classroom is located on the second level, along with a resource room and staff offices.
The CNM Foundation Department is located on the second level, overlooking the restaurant’s dining area. Its strategic location allows the Foundation to truly market and demonstrate CNM’s core educational values to visitors and future investors by providing visual participation between them and the educational activities held in the restaurant below.
The bookstore scope of work consisted of the renovation of the old APS Data Building. After the demolition of all interior partitions, re-roofing and retrofitting the mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, the new bookstore will become a more accessible space for students.
